The clear, pristine surface and subtle texture of Hanji evoke the image of snow-covered earth. Within a vast, nearly colourless expanse, one begins to imagine texture, air, and sound — the quiet atmosphere of polar landscapes.

Polar is a series of Hanji reliefs that emerges from this sensory association. Built through the accumulation of mulberry fibres, the raised structures suggest mountainous topographies. From the front they appear almost linear, yet when light falls and shadows form, their three-dimensional landscape gradually reveals itself. As in nature, form becomes visible through light; the work is completed in illumination.

Colour is reduced to nuanced tones of white, guiding the viewer toward the density of the surface, the tactile quality of the material, and the movement of light. In this reduced chromatic field, perception slows and the work is experienced as a quiet landscape.

The series began as an exploration of forming sculptural structure using only Dak fibre — the core material of Hanji — without glue or additives. A single sheet of paper acquires strength and dimensionality through material density alone. This dual condition — paper yet solid, planar yet spatial — defines the sculptural language of Polar.

한지를 바라볼 때 느껴지는 맑고 깨끗한 표면과 특유의 질감은 눈 덮인 대지를 연상시킨다. 색이 거의 사라진 광활한 공간 속에서 질감과 공기, 소리를 상상하게 되는 극지의 풍경이 떠오른다. 〈극지(Polar)〉는 이러한 감각에서 출발한 한지 부조 연작이다.

섬유를 축적해 형성한 융기된 구조는 산맥의 지형을 연상시키며, 정면에서는 직선에 가까운 인상으로 보이지만 빛이 비추고 그림자가 형성될 때 비로소 그 입체적 풍경이 드러난다. 자연이 빛 속에서 형상을 드러내듯, 작품 역시 빛과 함께 완성되는 구조를 지닌다.

색은 여러 톤의 흰색으로 최소화되어 관람자가 표면의 밀도와 질감, 빛의 흐름에 집중하도록 유도한다. 덜어낸 색의 공간 안에서 시선은 천천히 머물고, 작품은 하나의 조용한 풍경으로 경험된다.

이 연작은 한지의 핵심 재료인 닥섬유만으로 입체 구조를 형성하는 실험에서 시작되었다. 접착제나 다른 첨가물 없이도 한 장의 종이가 강도와 구조를 갖고 삼차원으로 확장될 수 있음을 탐구한다. 종이이지만 단단하고, 평면이지만 입체적인 이 양극적 물성은 Polar 시리즈의 중요한 조형적 특성이다.
