Forest Breeze - curve

Have you ever walked through a forest, and experienced the cool breeze on your face, and listened to the rustle of leaves as they collide with one another? If you have done this, you will know the cool green power that put your mind at ease. But you don’t need to visit a forest to get this sensation. ‘Forest Breeze’ is here. Described in the Korean language as hanji buchae - hanji, traditional paper, and buchae, the Korean for hand-fan – this reinterpretation of the fan visually and functionally captivates those unique moments of forest life.

The design, based on the tree, provides a forest-like experience, especially for those who collect fans of different sizes and proportions. Colours include white, pink, green, and yellow, the colours that can be experienced in trees of all four seasons. And when not in use, it can be enjoyed in the home as a free-standing work of art, a miniature manmade tree, that stands without a holder.

Quality is the aim and the result: the layers of Hanji paper sealed onto a strong bamboo framework is made to last, it becomes an extension of the hand, and generates a cool breeze with the very slightest of efforts.

The oldest fans known to us date from the 14th century BCE, and were found in the tomb of the Egyptian pharaoh Tutankhamun. The first known evidence of the fan in Asia are Korean, in the form of a lacquered fan handle from a tomb in Dahori. It is thought to have been made before the three ancient kingdoms of Goguryeo, Baekje, and Silla, which came to dominate the Korean Peninsula during the Three Kingdoms period at the start of the Common Era. It is believed that one Goryeo monarch presented fans on Dano Day to those who did good deeds. This gave rise to a custom that exists to this day, in the practice giving fans on the day of the summer dress is everywhere. So, fans have been with us and widely used since ancient times. They were valued highly, and presented as royal gifts.

Perhaps there is a renaissance of the fan underway in our times, because these beautiful machines have multiple uses that could make our contemporary lives far pleasanter. In addition to cooling us in the heat of the day, the fan protects us from the sun, it blocks unwanted wind, and it prevents dust from reaching our faces. Fans made with Korean hanji paper simultaneously remind us of the grandeur of the past and provide elegant decoration for the modern home when not in use.

Dyeing the handmade Hanji paper
The hand fan’s bamboo components are grown and trimmed by Korean artisan; this handmade Hanji paper is then worked by Kim HyunJoo at the prestigious KHJ Studio, and hand-finished there with a wooden handle.
